It seems like every time this winter that I’ve wanted to go out an hear music on a Saturday night, I have to contend with a snowstorm. Good thing this past Saturday didn’t disappoint, with a fresh coating on I75 to send us sliding all the way into Hamtramack. THC is fast becoming one of my favorite spots to go get my groove on to some tasty house and techno as of late. Good music, always an interesting crowd, and the big dude with the beard that bartends always hooks it up. When we got there I got to hear Vacuum rip it up for about an hour, and I have to say I was a bit sad when his set was over, I was really feelin it. Next on deck was Patrick Russell. His set started off strong, but he played a little too much minimal for my liking. Don’t get me wrong, Mr. Russell is very talented, and I have a DJ mix of his thats straight bangin. But on Saturday, I just wasn’t feeling it, for that part of the evening, the tracks should have been a little more jumping. Oh well, I had a good time, and it’s always good to support DetroitLuv.

Recession

Okay, I’m kind of going back on something I’ve said before. Oslo is overall disappointing most of the time, but there are some free nights coming up in the next couple months. On March 7th and April 2nd there’s some free house and techno featuring some folks that ain’t hit the decks in public in quite some time. I’m mainly gonna peep it out for Whistleboi, who I’m hoping won’t disappoint droppin‘ some oldschool speed garage and house. Hugh C is also playing, and I’ve seen dude drop some tight sets. So yeah, boooooo Oslo, I’m a fuckin hypocrite, but you can’t argue with free.

Has anybody else noticed when you go to parties in the D lately, that nobody has dance skills? Back in the day I would see people doing all types of crazy inventive moves.  You could learn steps just by attending parties and seeing what other peeps were doing.  Now, I feel that I rarely see a really good dancer at an electronic event in the D.  How are the youth gonna learn how to dance when everyone is standing around looking lame or dancing disgustingly drunken?  Has nobody heard of the Detroit Jit?  Check out these peeps from the D doing some fancy footwork.  Hopefully it will inspire you to learn some moves and brighten up the scene. Also Check out Hardcore Detroit and head done to the Cass Corridor for some lessons every Monday from 7:00-10:00 at the Cass Corridor Neighborhood Development Center.

I probably should have posted this awhile ago, it’s been well over a month. There is a slammin’ Speedy J podcast on XLR8R’s website, I was bumpin this to and from work all day. It starts off super minimal, and you can here the bass swell up like a rising tide, and then it just bangs, and doesn’t stop for an hour. I’ve been a huge Speedy J fan since i first got turned on to him in my rave days. Also check him out on Soundcloud, he has a page under his real name, Jochem Paap. It would be nice to see this dude come back to the D, i saw him prolly 2 years ago in the basement of the Masonic. Oh well, really good techno in Detroit only happens now and again, so you’re either there or your not.
