A Movement Upon Us

The “Tech Fest” or “DEMF” whatever you like to call it is on and poppin for another year with an impressive lineup and a ton of afterparties to fulfill your electronic desires. With artists like Adam Beyer, Steve Bug, Marco Carola, Carl Cox, Derrick May, Loco Dice vs. Luciano, Carl Craig, Afrika Bambaataa, Los Hermanos, and Dennis Ferrer we are sure to be fullfilled. Check out Paxahau for the full lineup, timeslots, and ticket info. Speaking of tickets, you can best beleive they are a little more expensive this year. With all the afterparties and $10 beers to spend your money on, you better come with some paypah. Definitly the afterparty to be at will be “I’m on a Boat” Sunday on the Detroit Princess featuring Loco Dice vs. Luciano, Stacey Pullen, Carl Craig, and Henrik Shwartz. Damn! If your a real baller like I am, then you might be thinking about buying a VIP pass to Movement ’09 for $150. This gets you access to special areas including a backstage area behind the main stage. You also get 6 free drink tickets and are able to purchase alcohol for $5 a drink. Not horrible if you got some serious promo to be slangin. For more afterparty info be sure to check out Detroit Luv. I’ll be there with my crew sporting some fancy new Lost Science t-shirts, so come holler at me and I’ll hook you up with my latest mix. Oh, also wilderness and I will be updated the blog regularly throughtout the festival so keep checking back. Peace!

To follow up with Art Martial’s post last weekend, fuck yeah Works for having decent music every weekend. Looks like there’s gonna be some bangin‘ electronic madness into the foreseeable summer with all the shit that’s set to be going down.
Anyway, Friday we were representin‘ at the Works again for Hot Culture. I had a great time, good music and surprises all night long. I definitely have to give mad props to the Disfresh crew for keeping the house music banging in the front room. Big ups to Sutter, his set was fuckin‘ great. Keeping with the hometown respect, Terry Charles and Jeremy Polin dropped some driving techno in the back room around 1am. Very different crowd for the Works, some crazy kids made it down from the suburbs to get down. I wish I would have caught the names of the dude’s breakin in the front room, they were fantastic. It was awesome that I could move from the front room to the back all night, and the music was always on point. Keep it up Detroit, looks like it might be a fun ass summer after all.

First things first, let me start out by saying props to the Works for being one of the few venues that consistently has Techno being bumped every damn weekend since I can remember. Although the crowd can sometimes be questionable and the acts can get a little redundant, the venue provides an outlet for electronic music in Detroit that should be much more appreciated than it sometimes is. People had the same poor attitudes towards Motor. Now Motor is gone, and we have a limited number of venues to hold decent events at. You would kill for Motor right now.

All ranting aside. Saturday night I stopped in at the Works to check out 2:37 am’s new clothing line release party. The front room had some local hip-hop cats doing there thing on the mic, and the back room had some pounding techno. There were a few breakers in the back doing some tight moves and all in there were a lot of people getting funky back there. The front’s crowd was a little boring maybe because of all the hater-aid going around. Come on! The breakers are in the Techno room? The emcees were on point though and the DJ’s were very good and energetic. Better crowd needed though. Maybe the Works freaked out some of the hip-hop fans. The first thing I noticed about this party that was different was that they brought in some extra speakers that provided a nice sound especially in the back room. Also in the back they had a DJ booth that was elevated and provided a nice change to the same old setup at the Works. It was nice to see an event with techno and hip-hop being played. I think it’s a good way for local artists and promoters from different perspectives to network, expand their minds, and cross-promote. So, props to 2:37 am for throwing a cool event and props to the Works for still being there.

Saturday day found me at Tour Detroit. I was pumped to see something going off at the Tangent Gallery for the first time in forever. The setup was way different than what I recall, but the house music was bumpin’, the crowd was feelin it, and Motor City Brewing Works pale ale is delicious. I’m really looking forward to Jeff Mills playing here during the festival, should be be an amazing soiree.
