Jeff Mills is nothing short of a legend in the D, and if your reading this blog, that probably goes without saying for you. From his early years rippin’ it up as “The Wizard”, to his plethora of releases over the last two decades, to blowing up soundsystems around the world, Mr. Mills is an important part of techno. This was the first Jeff Mills record I ever bought, and I was in love with it instantly. The first track on this EP is “The Bells”, which by many opinions, may be a bit overplayed by alot of DJs, but you know, I love this track, and everytime I hear someone drop it, there’s a nostalgic bliss that warms my mind. It’s a pretty simple track, but it just bangs. “Kat Race” is another great 4 on the floor techno track, its got a kick drum that just hits hard as fuck, and a drippy sounding synth hook, all backed up with a fat analog bass in the background. On the flip, “Alarms” borders on the more tribal side of techno. Its got an amazing jazzy stab as it rises, and it just keeps hitting hard all the way through(there’s a Ben Sims remix of this track that’s pretty sick also). The EP finishes out with “Cyclone”, which I think is the hardest track on the album, with a furious synth that keeps undulating and dreanching the track all the way through. I would go as far to say this is an essential piece for any Detroit techno collection, and a must have for vinyl junkies.
