What’s up everyone.  I thought I’d share a little something with you about a documentary currently being created.  It’s called BURN and is about what Detroit firefighters have to go through on a daily basis.  This project started a while back and has been funded mostly by donations from Kickstarter.  Recently they reached their goal of $80,000 and we should soon be able to see the full documentary.  Check out this short clip to get some insight into the project.  You can also still donate if you wish at their Kickstarter site .  Only seven days to go until the end, so if you wanna donate do it now.

I came across this great video while browsing through the Detroit Luv forum.  This is part of a series of mini documentaries created by Resident Advisor.  See Detroit artists like Kyle Hall and the Beretta Music crew talking about Detroit Techno. Also nice footage of classic Detroit spots like Motor, the Packard Plant, and Detroit Threads to name a few.

Ok, Ok, so I’m super late on posting up something about this. Were about midway through the Redbull Music Academy in downtown Detroit which is running September 12-17th. An amazing amount of talent that will be at this event and I have heard from a close source that the overall turnout has been rather low so far, so you have a chance to get up close and personal with some Detroit music gods. There have already been several workshops from the likes of Mike Banks, Juan Atkins, Carl Craig and Theo Parrish. Tonight there will be lectures by hip hop super-producer Dabyre and legendary Motown recording engineer Ed Wolfrum. Oh yeah, and it’s all free! Just walk right in. For more info check out this link http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/worldtour/detroit/.

Saturday night led Alex and I down to the Works to check out Drumcell and Kyle Geiger.  The venue had a nice ravey atmosphere and bangin techno.  The bar tender was also pouring some strong drinks.  These drinks were just strong enough to give us the courage to go ascend an abandoned building we’ve been casing for the last couple weeks.  We swooped up a couple deuces and on we went.  Used the flashlight app on my phone for light and climbed every flight until the top.  The view was breathtaking and we felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment.  After our excursion, I did a little research on these babies and found a wealth of history.  These were built in 1935 and the ground was broke by first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt.  They were home to Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, Lily Tomlin, and Smokey Robinson.  Who knows, maybe we were in one of their units that night.   The animated series, The PJ’s were also based on these projects.  At the southern edge of the Brewster projects is Hastings Street.  It was a center for black culture between the 1920s and  1950s.   You could find everything you needed back in the day on this street and John Lee Hooker references it in his song, Boogie Chillen’.  So overall we had a fantastic night.  Sorry to the artists we were unable to see at the Works, but we had more important things to attend to.  Check out this link for more info and some great pictures.
