Ahhhh…Record Store Day, my favorite holiday of the year. I mean for real, a day dedicated to supporting your favorite independent record store, what could be better for some rabid vinyl collectors like us? Of course we made it down to Detroits number one spot for electronic wax, Detroit Threads. Nice crowd in the store diggin’ the crates, and an amazing selection of tracks, as always. Picked up some amazing cut’s (re-press of “Throw” by Paperclip People!) and got to hear DJ Psycho throw down some hard ass techno. Bonus! Big ups to anyone who made it out to a record store on Saturday, support that local shit, fuck the “all digital” bullshit.

Saturday was also the the Motor Reunion, quite possibly the last electronic event that will be ever thrown at this iconic location. So many wonderful memories fill my mind whenever I reminisce of Motor, but alas, I learned an important lesson this weekend. Don’t sleep on the pre-sales for something like this! I missed out due to my procrastination(and the fact that it was sold the fuck out!). However, thank you Detroit Techno Militia for your massive photographic coverage. Make sure you check out all the pics on their Facebook page. Plus, there are some awesome pics of Record Store Day at Detroit Threads! It was an amazing weekend in Detroit overall, I hope you were there.

Haven’t been out in some time, so it felt good to make it down to Bert’s in Eastern Market  for some House music and a good cause. Now my previous experience with Bert’s has always been the annual mega-raves (Shazzam, Blakout, ect.) so it was cool just checking out the Motown Room. Bonus, all the booths have an awesome theme, like Marvin Gaye or Martha Reeves, complete with pics and original 45s.

Now the line-up that was posted was pretty awesome overall, with some new names, and plenty of solid old-school Detroit talent, but I found no mentions of set times, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. We rolled in a little before midnight, and John Clees was dropping some house hotness. I’ve actually never seen this dude spin before, and his track selection was spot on, plus I got mad love for any DJ who spins vinyl! He got the crowd moving, and the place really started to fill up with an eclectic mix of house heads both young and old. Next on the decks was Daniel Andres, whom I had never heard of prior to this. After about a 10 minute cluster fuck of getting his Serato and/or Traktor set up(one of my criticisms of these products has always been the extra setup time), he finally started off with some glitchy-ish techno tracks. This was not what this crowd was craving so after about 15 or so minutes, he got the clue and stared dropping some jackin’ House, and the dance floor blew up.

Didn’t end up staying super late, we split right before Pirahnahead went on. Looked like a good turnout though, and I hope they made plenty of cash for Japan. Much love to all those who have been affected by the Tsunami, wherever you may be.

If there is one thing I like more than old school electro shows, it’s Classic Detroit electro shows-in an art gallery! The MOCAD in downtown Detroit would be the destination for the night, and this is where the journey began. An opening of a few new exhibits would be the reason for the event. The gallery was debuting work by Edgar Arceneaux: Miracles and Jokes, Circle Disk Rotation and 22 Lost Signs of the Zodiac, as well as LifeStories- A group exhibition featuring Pina Bausch, Patricia Esquivias, Simryn Gill, Peter Lemmens, Jàn Mančuška and Rachel Mason. This wonderful art gallery on Woodward would have the place buzzing with the avant garde, and to close the night they would invite some legendary musical acts to perform their craft. Truthfully, for me, Aux 88 is all you had to say, but let it be known that it was not the first time I had been to the MOCAD, and it certainly won’t be the last … Wonderfully ran place over there, with some type of thought provoking art for every kind of enthusiast. I strongly recommend a stroll through their hallways whether or not you hear spaceship techno in the connected performance hall… When I entered into the music area Aux 88 was about halfway through their set. If you know about these guys, then I am doing a disservice over-explaining, if not here is a place to educate oneself . Real quick for those in the dark… Basically they are a classic Detroit electro duo formed originally in 1985 under the name RX-7, producing a string of singles and finally settling on the name Aux 88 in 1993. Made it down to a record show in Royal Oak yesterday to do some serious digging. Not a ton of vendors, but really an overall fantastic selection to go through. You could have gone nuts in all the $1 boxes loaded with funk, soul, and Motown. Electronic music was a little more far and few between, unless you kind of knew what to look for on that b-side tip. Met the daughter of John Sinclair(the poet and activist) selling music/counterculture pictures from the 60s/70s. Probably the best thing was this guy with a huge crate of hip-hop and ghettotech/electro tracks for $2 a pop. There were some real gems in there! My finds of the day were “Analog Bubblebath Volume 4″ by AFX and the “Up in Smoke” soundtrack for a buck. If this show comes back any time soon, don’t sleep on it if you’re a vinyl fanatic. Here are a few pics from the show. Continue reading »
