So Deaf!

These guys recently hit me up about some dope techno tracks that they have coming out soon. So Deaf! is Robb Grant and Chris Wyman from Northamton, UK, and they definitely got some skills and some street cred in the electronic music world. The tracks I was turned onto, “Rock and Rolla” and “Lost those Marbles?”, are some heavy hitters that deserve a listen from any techno or house aficionado. “Rock and Rolla” is a darker, stripped down techno track, with twisted, tripped out vocals samples and deep heavy bass drums. “Lost those Marbles”(which was my favorite track) is a deep tech-house gem with banging drums, and super airy, almost atmospheric synths. Check out these tracks plus a bunch of others(and a sweet podcast) on their soundcloud page, or myspace page. Peace.

Review: Ibex - Eden E.P.

Having produced tracks for Carl Craig’s Planet E label, Ibex is no newcomer to the Detroit scene. With his new release, Eden, you can really tell this artist has a seasoned ear and knows the Detroit sound. Growing up during the legendary Music Institute days has molded Ibex into a talented musician able to take the listener on a sonic adventure. Each track on the Eden E.P. is loaded with deep synth tones put together in a jazz-like progression reminiscent of UR’s “Mad” Mike Banks. Although being more towards the techno side of things, this E.P. definitely crosses into the deep tech-house realm. Each track is very good on its own and I can see myself spinning all of them. If your not up on Exchange Bureau your missing out, because along with Ibex, they hold a rather impressive roster of artists new and old. So head over to Exchange Bureau’s Blog and check out these new tracks peoples.

Detroit Tracks 4.0: Jeff Mills-The Kat Moda EP ft.The Bells, Kat Race, Alarms, Cyclone

Jeff Mills is nothing short of a legend in the D, and if your reading this blog, that probably goes without saying for you. From his early years rippin’ it up as “The Wizard”, to his plethora of releases over the last two decades, to blowing up soundsystems around the world, Mr. Mills is an important part of techno. This was the first Jeff Mills record I ever bought, and I was in love with it instantly. The first track on this EP is “The Bells”, which by many opinions, may be a bit overplayed by alot of DJs, but you know, I love this track, and everytime I hear someone drop it, there’s a nostalgic bliss that warms my mind. It’s a pretty simple track, but it just bangs. “Kat Race” is another great 4 on the floor techno track, its got a kick drum that just hits hard as fuck, and a drippy sounding synth hook, all backed up with a fat analog bass in the background. On the flip, “Alarms” borders on the more tribal side of techno. Its got an amazing jazzy stab as it rises, and it just keeps hitting hard all the way through(there’s a Ben Sims remix of this track that’s pretty sick also). The EP finishes out with “Cyclone”, which I think is the hardest track on the album, with a furious synth that keeps undulating and dreanching the track all the way through. I would go as far to say this is an essential piece for any Detroit techno collection, and a must have for vinyl junkies.

Detroit Tracks 3.0: Mad Mike-High Tech Dreams/Lo Tech Reality

So we here at DTH blog are pretty nuts about anything UR, or even anything associated with UR. Thanks be that we have Detroit Threads to give me my fix for my Underground Resistance vinyl addiction. This track is one of my personal favorites, but I feel like it’s kind of a sleeper hit, I never hear to many people play it. Mad Mike is awesome, seems like anything dude touches is straight gold. I remember what first got me on this album was the artwork on the A/B labels, what a true statement to the reality that Detroit has seen in the last quarter century. On the A side is “High Tech Dreams”, a dope piece of broken beat techno mastery. Complete with spacey chopped up vocals, and a tight little synth hook, this track is straight Detroit techno, and it’s trippy how the tempo keeps changing up. On the B side are 2 tracks. “Hold My Own” is a bit slower, almost hip-hop beat with weird guitar samples and aliens vocal samples. This track would go awesome in a downtempo set. “Lo Tech Reality” pairs haunting vocals with a slowly rising, hypnotic synth, this track is a straight banger in my book. If you like your techno vinyl, definitely swoop a copy of this, and support local musicians!
