It was Sunday July 3rd around 12:37 am, fireworks had slowed for the evening, and I was feeling antsy. It was then that I decided myself and my significant other would venture out into the depths of the West Side for a little bit of Detroit House Music. Word was Delano Smith (A Detroit underground pioneer) would be spinning an outdoor venue in Detroit, and the party was gonna be hot! I decided to test the waters and was not disappointed. The place was easy enough to find, and the venue was strikingly well put together for what it was. As an added bonus Minx was added to the event lineup, and we walked in during her set. If you don’t know Minx, she is a house legend in the D, and she is amazing behind the decks! What I saw of her set was pretty slammin’. She kept the mixed BBQ-esque crowd dancing despite the unsure footing. She glided in and out of mixes and used the Xone 92 mixer nicely. She had a class about her that was both grown-up and still very fresh. I have to say it was nice to hear some real house music played in Detroit.

Delano Smith jumped right on the decks after Minx and he had a lot of energy. One of the great things about Delano is that he is a producer, so most of the tracks from his set actually came from his own hand… He also sprinkled in some well known anthems and even a few new joints that had the kids at the party going bonkers. It seemed like he might have been having trouble with one of CDJ decks, but he handled it like a professional, and most of the crowd didn’t have a clue. All together it was a very successful night for Detroit house music, and the fans were the true winners. A new outdoor/indoor venue, great music, and a vibe that made you feel comfortable and welcome. The people at Proper Modulation and Random Reason have a lot to be proud of, and I can only say that I hope to see more events like this in the future. Thanks to all that came out and especially to everyone who had a hand in creating this event, it was a banger! Check out the video of the party getting down to Minx and Delano Smith below, they were tearing up the backyard!

Hello Ladies and Gents, for those of you who decided to run from the rabid squirrels at Electric Forest, we at DTH have got the scoop on what is really going on this weekend. Detroit will be filled with the oohs and aahs of strippers burning their nipples, and that ain’t the only party in town.

Friday July 1

Beatniks Gallery Rooftop Party @ The Russell Industrial Center (1600 Clay St. Building 2, Detroit, MI). This event features performance by DJ Seoul, John Johr, Midnite Jackers, William Paul, Charlie and Sheen, D’Vice, and Dru Ruiz. There is a $10 Suggested donation with free beer, punch, and food till it’s gone… This party is to commemorate the opening of the new headshop in the Russel Industrial center, and there will be a fireworks display after the show!

Surburban Knight @ The Works (1846 Michigan Avenue, Detroit, MI) w/ DJ Tank and Josh Surma. This party is free before 11pm and $5 after, 18+. It’s not too often that he comes out for a nibble on your soul, but you better get there if you want to be bitten by the original rave bug.

I love Sunday at Movement. It’s the peak of the festival, everyone’s party vibe is going full steam, and I know that the best after parties of the weekend are awaiting me when I leave Hart Plaza that evening. This Sunday was another battle with fickle Michigan weather, but the talent that filled the line-up, and the party attitude of the crowd made it almost unnoticeable. We made a point to show up early, avoid the lines (see yesterday’s post), and enjoy some of the amazing artists that were playing earlier in the day.

Our first stop was the Made in Detroit stage to catch some house vibes from Mike Brown. This guy is a staple of the whole mid-west house scene in my opinion, and I have always enjoyed his opening sets at the various Radio Skool parties in Detroit. Mr. Brown was bringing some proper house music that had the crowd breaking in their dancing shoes for the afternoon.
