This weekend is looking to be a great one!  Head down to The Works on Friday and check out Underground Resistance’s James Pennington(aka. Suburban Knight) and Jammin John Collins.  This charity event, Backpacking for Success, is free before 12 and $5 after.  They are excepting donations of school supplies, so please support the youth and make it out for this event.  Bring an extra backpack you have around and donate it to support the cause.  (The Works 1846 Michigan Ave, Detroit, MI 48216)

Motor, a classic Detroit venue, is holding a reunion party at the famous location in Hamtramck, MI on Saturday.  This used to be the best spot to see DJ’s from around the world and from the D rock it out on a weekly basis.  When I turned 18 I was literally there almost every weekend and sometimes 3 times a week.  Terrence Parker used to spin on Tuesday nights free before 11 o’clock.  It was an awesome venue that remains in many Detroiter’s memories.  So come out this Saturday and experience Motor for the last time.  Kevin Saunderson will be rocking the decks alongside Chuck Flask, Dennis Cox, Gabe Real, Mike Clarke, DJ Minx, Greg Mudge, and Brian Gillespie.  (Motor Lounge 3515 Caniff, Hamtramck, MI)

Also this Saturday is Record Store Day.  Head down to Detroit Threads before the show and check out some local Detroit DJ’s tearin it up and buy some records while your there.  Definitely sounds like Hamtramck is the place to be on Saturday hmmm.  Check out this video of Record Store Day last year and have a great weekend.  (Detroit Threads 10238 Joseph Campau, Hamtramck, MI)

Hello my friends.  We are very ecstatic to bring you this episode of our podcast.  This particular one is a milestone for us in many ways.  First being we are featuring our first interview, with Detroit’s Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale.  She stopped by the studio last week and dropped some knowledge on us as well as a hot mix.  With Hotwaxx being a part of her name we were interested in her opinion on the vinyl vs. digital debate as well as some other topics.  She just got back from the Winter Music Conference as well as a show at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.  The show entitled “Black Women Rock“  had many successful musicians that Ms. Hotwaxx got to work with and in this episode we get a little insight into that experience.  Staying true to our core traditions, you can also expect some hot tracks acquired by Alex and I.  This time we’re focusing on newer Detroit House and Techno from 2007 to now.  Expect some Planet E, some Transmat, and also a new track from Codine released by the Blank Artists.  This is my favorite podcast so far and hope you like it also.  Check it out!

It doesn’t seem too long ago that I was questioning whether using a digital vinyl system was cheating or not.  I knew because I would be able to see the waveforms in Serato that It would be easier to mix, flat out.  I also knew that this would make me able to mix faster without having to switch the records.  Basically I thought to myself that these improvements to technology would make me a better DJ without sacrificing the time to master the skill.  To a new-schooler this sounds like a bunch of jargon but not too long back it was all about your ability to mix and keep the records synced(just using your ears).  Anything else was not excepted in the Detroit Techno scene.  This is hard to do and most people cannot do it.  Aspiring DJ’s would run away crying at the thought of having to beat-match.  Many said “I cannot do this” and stopped aspiring.  Nowadays anybody with a laptop could quickly learn to be a “passable” mixer as far as beat-matching goes.  The thing that I learned through my experience with helping people DJ with laptops is that they don’t understand concepts of song structure(notes, measures).  They think that because they have the songs synced and it looks good on the screen that they’re good to go out and be a superstar.  Continue reading »

It is cold out there and everything is trashed.  The only fragments of musical life we can see are hidden inside broken down buildings with Motown 45s in a suitcase but it’s a little cold for adventuring.  So blessed be the internet.  Blessed be garage sales.  Bless Craig and his list.  The ability to equip yourself is here.  They can take our turntables away and give us fancy computers as replacements but nothing beats the vinyl baby.  I see you listening to your ipods and so do I but best believe if a Technic had a headphone jack and ran on batteries Id be sportin that shit.  You can throw stones at glass houses but shouldn’t throw stones at Walter Glasshouse.  He likes electro and so do I.  If you did that then I would steal all your vinyl and copper.  This is no good for you my friend.  Me and you both must listen to this episode of the DTH podcast to accumulate good merit.
