Detroit Loves Japan@Berts Motown Room, 3.18.2011

Haven’t been out in some time, so it felt good to make it down to Bert’s in Eastern Market  for some House music and a good cause. Now my previous experience with Bert’s has always been the annual mega-raves (Shazzam, Blakout, ect.) so it was cool just checking out the Motown Room. Bonus, all the booths have an awesome theme, like Marvin Gaye or Martha Reeves, complete with pics and original 45s.

Now the line-up that was posted was pretty awesome overall, with some new names, and plenty of solid old-school Detroit talent, but I found no mentions of set times, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. We rolled in a little before midnight, and John Clees was dropping some house hotness. I’ve actually never seen this dude spin before, and his track selection was spot on, plus I got mad love for any DJ who spins vinyl! He got the crowd moving, and the place really started to fill up with an eclectic mix of house heads both young and old. Next on the decks was Daniel Andres, whom I had never heard of prior to this. After about a 10 minute cluster fuck of getting his Serato and/or Traktor set up(one of my criticisms of these products has always been the extra setup time), he finally started off with some glitchy-ish techno tracks. This was not what this crowd was craving so after about 15 or so minutes, he got the clue and stared dropping some jackin’ House, and the dance floor blew up.

Didn’t end up staying super late, we split right before Pirahnahead went on. Looked like a good turnout though, and I hope they made plenty of cash for Japan. Much love to all those who have been affected by the Tsunami, wherever you may be.
